9th Grade Academy

In response to federal and state education reform, all Hawaii high schools were charged to "restructure" how and what they are teaching.  Beginning next year, AHS plans to establish the first freshman academy and eventually, over the next 4 years, have all 9th-12th grade students in these academies or smaller learning communities.  What's new?

(1) You would be taught by the same team of teachers from grades 9-12.  (2) The team of teachers can establish relationships with you and your family that would be responsive to your needs.  (3) You would have learning opportunities beyond the classroom; internships to explore and decide on career interests.   (4) You would need to show how much and how well you have learned at AHS by presenting your projects to an audience of "experts" (business, community, subject or career-related representatives).

On March 11, 2004, AHSACA President Doug Hom participated in Aiea Intermediate School Parent Night.  Dressed in "cap and gown", Doug addressed the parents and students of the 8th grade and gave his views on the importance of the new Academy Program.
