Ke Kai O Kahiki Overall Winner Two Years in a Row!!

Kumu hula and past AHSACA President, O'Brian Eselu ('73) did it again, winning the overall Merrie Monarch Hula Competition of 2010 last night in the Edith Kanaka'ole Stadium in Hilo.  Our congratulations goes out to O'Brian and the men of Ke Kai O Kahiki.  When asked if after winning two years in a row if he would compete again next year.  O'Brian replied, "Yes, I am coming back next year..."

Homecoming Week:  September 7 - 11

As Aiea High celebrates its Homecoming Week, the alumni came back to the school for 2 events.  The first was an ice cream giveaway in which students who bought school lunch were given free ice cream compliments of the good folks at Dave's Hawaiian Ice Cream.  This was a Win-Win-Win situation.  Not only did the alumni did something good for the school and students got free ice cream, but more importantly, the event boosted lunch sales which are counted in the month of September and results in funding for the cafeteria program.  Second event was the homecoming game and the alumni were there passing out free candy and free Aiea High Alumni decals for all those alumni who were there at the game.  A great game and a lot of happy people.  Again, just another way the AHSACA gives back to school we grew up with.

Congratulations

to our 2009 AHSACA Scholarship Recipients.  From left to right:  Nancy Bertulfo, Mareaux Medri, Kris Yamaguchi, and Natasha Fong.  Assisting in the presentation of the scholarships is new AHSACA member and former recipient of the AHSACA scholarship, Wendi Kagawa ('04) far right.  These individuals were selected based on their involvement in school and the community.

SOS Bash committee members (left) got a chance to eat in the Aiea High  Cafeteria during the AHS Recognition Dinner which was put on by the school to recognize all those who helped the school and to induct the new class officers for the coming year (right).

Committee members couldn't remember how great cafeteria food tasted!   Especially the apple brown betty... yum....

The SOS (Support Our School) Bash  was held on February 15, 2009 at Ige's Restaurant and 19th Puka in Aiea.  Partnering with the AHS PTSO, the AHSACA put together a successful fundraiser, filled with food, drinks, entertainment, silent auction, good friends and good times.  With Ron Ige ('74) donating the use of his restaurant plus providing the food and soft drinks, the event raised over $30,000.  We want to thank all of you who contributed to this fundraiser by donating your time, money, items for the silent auction, and for participating in this event.

Aiea Community Christmas Parade

The second annual Aiea Community Christmas Parade was held on Saturday morning, December 13, 2008.   This year the parade started at Pearlridge Elementary and ended up at the "old Aiea Sugar Mill" site -- the future home of the proposed Aiea Community Center.  As always, the AHSACA was there to strut our stuff... so there were times that  we couldn't keep up with the rest of the parade... you got to give us "old folks" credit for showing our Christmas spirit.  At the end of  the parade the Aiea Community Association held a Family Fair.  There were a wide assortment of booths, entertainment and free hot dogs!  See you next year...

White Elephant Sale

Former Vice President Susan Suzuki (fourth from right) is surrounded by customers at our White Elephant booth during the recent Aiea High School Crafts and Fun Fair held on Nov. 15, 2008.   Many thanks for all the donations of "white elephants"  from members, friends and students as they found new homes in the community.  All proceeds from the sale will go towards scholarships for deserving students at Aiea High.

Happy Thanksgiving to the

Aiea Community Association

This year the AHSACA presented the "Thank You" basket to the Aiea Community Association.  Always planning to make Aiea a better place to live, the ACA was instrumental in procuring the Aiea Sugar Mill site to be used as a community center.  They've also reinstated the Aiea Christmas Parade, pulling the community together and restoring pride to the residents of Aiea.  President of the ACA, Claire ('69, Toyofuku) Tamamoto (fourth from left) stands amongst her members and members of the AHSACA for the presentation of the two baskets.
